Phil explores how colour, shape and pattern can create and communicate feeling, sensation and personality within his artwork. He draws influence from a broad range of styles: Abstract Expressionism, Constructivism, Typography, Street Art, Graffiti and Graphic Design.
Process is all-important: improvising and responding to gesture, marks and materials, layering shape and colour within space. The work evolves and grows into its own being.
Music is an important element in the process from start to finish. As an avid record collector, DJ and occasional broadcaster, Phil’s life long love affair with music seeps into his work, often inspiring the personality or title of the art.
